Wetsuits for Surfing
A long
long way a go, wetsuits technology has come. Wet suits makes a surfer
comfortable in cold water temperature. It’s above 65 degrees or below. You will
need a wetsuit if you want to surf all year round and you are the average
surfer.
Wetsuits
of surfer are made from synthetic rubber, usually neoprene, which trap a thin
layer of water between your body and the suit. That trapped layer of water is
what allows you to retain heat. Wetsuits come as full suits, shorties (the
Wetsuit has short legs and arms), and some even have detachable arms and legs.
Wetsuit
should not be too tight, but should be snug. You can consult for your wetsuit
sizing before to buy your first wetsuit. Most brands have it, likes Rip Curl,
Billabong, Apparel, Oneill, Quick Silver, Roxy. Surfing wetsuits made with no zipper, short zipper, and regular back zipper.
Good wetsuits seal well around the zippers. If you don’t comfortable with a back zipper, you can use front zippers, some
brans available with this.
You must
consider the water temperature where you’ll be surfing before buying a surfing
wetsuit. The thickness will be described in mm for chest/arms-legs. The
thickness of the wetsuit you choose depends primarily on the water temperature
your surfing in as well as your tolerance/comfort level. In general, a 3/2 will
work in water temps of 65-55 degrees, a 4/3 in 54-49 degrees, and a 5/4 in
48-43 degrees. Some wetsuits will have built in hoods, especially the thicker
ones for colder water.
Popular brands
of cold water wetsuits include Billabong, Oneill, Rip Curl, and Quicksilver.
These brands use high quality glue, taped and stitched seams, and reinforced
kneepads.
