The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico seepuertorico.com seeded presented in rainwater eight feet (two meters) wave field was to limit the Round of 32.
Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), 28, has used a strategy of selective waves to win his round of 64 heat. The Californian opened his account with a long curve to the right and find most of its heat to a checking account.
"My strategy was to try and be selective," says Curran. "There’s not a lot of guys catching waves and I lucked in to the first one and it put me on the board. I was trying to be patient and I got caught down in to five minutes before my next good one. I would have rather got one earlier, but I think the guys that are patient are the guys that are getting through today. "
Curran, former ASP WCT competitors finished 39 in the ASP world rankings last season and take advantage of the Rip Curl Pro in Puerto Rico to launch its global campaign to try to qualify for the ASP Top 34 again.
"This is a warmup event for me," said Curran. "The waves are really fun and the proximity to home and the atmosphere is great. This is a fun way to start the year and I will look and choose to do the events. I really wanted to have a good year. "
CJ Hobgood (Melbourne, FL), 33, seeded at the Rip Curl Pro in Puerto Rico, was one of the heads of the candle area difficult to pass the round of 32.
"It's fun because you're out there surfing and tipis are six feet," Hobgood said. "You want to take off on a wave, but no wall. Would you like a big shift down and then disappear to make it so that you get up in the lip before we think. Either I make excuses, but I have I have a kind of heat. Not much chance, but to be taken if it appears. "
Hobgood is another veteran competitor in the patient based on the success in the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico to find today.
"I told myself that no one else had the grades and to be patient," said Hobgood. "The only time to relax, I really, is when you are on the inside of the turn. Really is like any other competition. If you want to do that, should be performed in all conditions. We have conditions like this all the time in SR, but I was lucky that no one posted a big score in this heat. "
Rob Kelly (Ocean City, New Jersey), aged 23, a young surfer was to find success despite the dominance of the high seeds today. Kelly, who spends much time in queues of Puerto Rico during the winter months, appeared to be well within the range of Jobos and local knowledge of the Co-competitors Dylan Graves (Isabella, PR) to help 27 years her success today.
"It was hectic because you do not know where she is, and just go and do your thing," Kelly said. "I wanted to see Dylan (Graves) closely, what he did. Focusing on what helped him."
Kelly, who advanced in small waves, clean yesterday, today demonstrates impressive versatility in the comfort range Jobos disorganized. "They are two different ends of the past," said Kelly. "Yesterday, I dragged and now is the largest I've surfed Jobos".
